New Water Ski Course Exemption Rule!

UWSC Members,

See below for the new water ski course exemption rule that is proposed to be included in the official Utah State Boating Laws and Rules.
The only real change that was not included in the Water Ski Amendments (Senate Bill 84) that was passed in the spring is the addition of required Utah Water Ski Club active membership documentation onboard. This is a reminder to keep your membership card and government issued ID with you when skiing the clubs course if you want to be exempt. The UWSC Board still strongly encourages all members to use a coast guard approved vest, observer, and flag when skiing in the clubs course.

Happy Holidays!

UWSC October News - Changes

UWSC Members,

As we wind down the year we wanted to make you aware of a few changes for next year.

-When you renew your USA Water Ski membership you now have the option of choosing ACTIVE membership for $80 or supporting member for $35. If you even think you will be skiing tournaments in 2013 please sign up as a ACTIVE membership which gives you these benefits The main benefit is secondary personal Injury Insurance of $10,000 when participating in USA Water Ski-sanctioned events. In the past we were able to sanction club practices but in order for us to do that in the future we have to have a rated driver pulling every member which is just not possible for most members. Starting in 2013 club practices will no longer be sanction so you will not have secondary insurance, you will still have insurance as a ACTIVE member when you ski in tournaments. The board feels that USA Water Ski is still worth supporting which is why we still require members to be at least a supporting member. Go to to learn about what USA Water Ski does with its money.

-Starting in 2013 you will be able to renew your club membership on-line or by e-mail and pay with PayPal. This is something the board is still working on but you can see what we have so far at Reminder that membership dues are due by March 31st or you will be dropped from the club! The club is going to be very strict with this March 31st deadline in the future which is only fair to the Membership VP. Having the membership VP and other board members continually calling and e-mailing a few late members every spring is a real pain and waste of time.

-The club does keep track of who participates in the clubs Adopt-a-Park service projects every year. A reminder that it is required that you attend one of the two projects every year or go down on your own, sign in with the state park, and ask what you can do. As of now the club is not kicking people out or charging fees for those that don't attend at least one of these two Adopt-a-Park service project but it is something that gets talked about and may need to be implemented in the future.

-For those of you still skiing course #3 is still very shallow but the water is finally coming back up. When skiing course #3 make sure the boat and the skier are always in-line with the course when you start. Typically we ski course #3 until the water drops to -3.00, go to to see the current lake level and make sure you look on calm days since wind causes wrong readings.

Happy Skiing!

September News - Adopt-a-Park service project

UWSC Members,

The second Adopt-a-Park service project of the year is this Saturday September 15th, meeting at 10am in-front of the main building and will be picking up trash for no more than one hour. The club has two adopt-a-park service projects every year on the third Saturday in May and the third Saturday in September. Members are required to attend at least one adopt-a-park service project every year, expecting a big turn out since we only had about 20 members in May. If you are unable to attend one of the two scheduled service projects you can still go down to Utah Lake State Park on your own, sign in at the office under the Utah Water Ski Club and ask what you can do. The service projects are a great way for the club to give back to the Utah Lake State Park and is also a great way for club members, family, friends, and wait list members to get to know each other.

Thanks to all of the members who participated in the Utah State Championships (Keith Morgan, John Lohner, Vickie Smoot, John/Dana/Shaela Adams, Mike/Tyler/Josh Nelson, Kelly/Scot/Matt Chipman, Mark Chilcutt, Darin Mercer, and Tim Peterson). Go to for a picture and video of Shaela Adams skiing a tournament PB.

Course #3 is getting very shallow! When skiing course #3 make sure the boat and the skier are always in-line with the course when you start. Typically we ski course #3 until the water drops to -3.00, we are getting very close. To see the current level go to

Utah State Championships Information

Go to for the Utah State Championships running order and assignments. As always, there could be a few changes.  If you have any assignment change requests, e-mail or check with Jeff Milford on Saturday morning.

As you can see we have a full tournament and then some.  We will be starting right at 9:00 am with novice.  If we have any novice skiers who add, they will be skiing before 9:00 am.  Round 2 will start again with novice and then Group 2, Group 3....

We will need skiers, judges, drivers, scorers and dock starters to be ready to go and in place before the end of the previous group.  Also, if you are the first or second skier in a group, be ready at the dock as the last skiers are finishing in the group before.  This will be critical to get all the ski rides done before dark.

We will be using a 50 second wait time at the ends of the lake.  That give you plenty of time for the water to settle, to catch your breath or chat with the boat.  The drivers will be holding pretty close to that so we can finish and with the best conditions possible for all skiers.

If you have not signed a SunTen Lake Waver, we will need one signed before you practice on Friday or ski in the tournament on Saturday.  Will will have a list of skiers who we need wavers from on the dock and the wavers.

The Goode State Championships medal presentations will be at the end of the tournament.

Thanks in advance for skiing and helping with the tournament.  See you on Saturday morning!

#32:  Paul Rauterkus

For example if the # 24 person on the wait list bids $150 on the # 14 position ($15 per spot) he/she would win over the # 44 person who bids $300 ($10 per spot) on the # 14 position. Also if you are the highest bid at say $15 per spot and the next highest bid in $10, you would win and only pay $11 per spot, not $15. If you have any questions e-mail
This year there are seven spots up for bid.  You can bid on one spot, or you can bid on multiple spots.  When making your bid, please state which spot/spots you are bidding for.

In the future, if you want to put your spot up for bid you MUST notify the VP of membership BEFORE APRIL 1st as stated on Also if you put your spot up for bid, you have no control of where you end up so you would only want to do it if you no longer want to be on the wait list.  If you have not paid your yearly Wait List fee for the current year then all money received from the auction goes to the club.  If you are have paid your yearly fee then you will receive back from the auction $8.33 for every spot that the winning bidder moved up on the list.

Thanks for your interest in the Utah Water Ski Club and happy skiing!

Senate Bill 84 passed!

Great news, S.B. 84 passed the house!

Thanks to everyone who took the time to e-mail support of the bill to the legislators.

Still need help with S.B. 84

Senate Bill 84 has been approved by the senate, it now moves onto the house. If S.B 84 is passed by the house it will amend the current water ski laws to allow (not recommended by the club) people to ski a marked slalom course areas on public water with a non coast guard approved vest, without an observer, and no skier down flag will be required. The house transportation committee has new been assigned S.B 84, if you support the bill please e-mail the house transportation committee members below and your house representative BY MONDAY THE 27th if possible stating your support of the bill. Below you will find a simple e-mail you can copy/past and send or better yet make a version of your own in support of the bill. One way to think of a marked slalom course area is like a closed course race track where different rules apply and in the case of a slalom course only one boat is used at a time.

Custom Covers

Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to give all the members an update on one of our sponsors, Custom Covers.  For those of you who didn't attend the club meeting last Thursday at the Boat Show, I posted a recap of what happened at the meeting.  So I don't want to repeat myself in this email.  In a nutshell, Randy Park of Parks Sportsman came and presented at our meeting Thursday.  He told us about Parks Sportsman and how he wants to be a major player and provider of watersports equipment the club members.  He had a lot of great ideas and plans.  He was also very fun and entertaining.  Go to the website and read up on all he had to say and offer.
Also at our meeting was Justin Jones, owner of Custom Covers in Salt Lake.  He's not a member of the club but he attended our meeting when he saw the notice on Facebook.  Yesterday, Saturday, I was back up at the boat show.  Justin saw me and called me over to talk.  He told me that Randy Park at our meeting really motivated him and he wants to "step up to the plate" like Randy did.  So he is changing the club's discount that he has been offering us.  In the past, and on our membership card, Justin has offered us 5% discount on all his products and 20% discount during the off-season.  But starting now Justin will give all club members and waitlist members 25% all year round!  And during the off-season he will do even better than that.  You'll just need to talk to him.
If you are not familar with Justin, Custom Covers makes in my opinion the best bimini top in the industry.  For more info on Custom Covers go to
Those of you on the waitlist, these discounts apply to you as well.
Just thought I would let you guys know.

We ate good!

Last Thursday, February 8th, was our annual club Boat Show meeting.  We had a good turnout with approximately 30 to 40 members and their families attending.  The meeting was catered so we had good food to go along with the meeting.  The food alone makes the meeting worth attending.  And then those who attended were able to get into the Boat Show for no charge.

Those of you who didn't attend really missed out.  Particularly this year because those who attended also received a $25.00 gift certificate to Parks Sportsman in Orem.  But the best part of the meeting was being able to visit with all the different members of the club.  We really have a good group of people and I'm grateful for the new friendships that I have been able to make since being a member of the club.

Randy Park
Last Summer I was contacted by Randy Park of Parks Sportsman in Orem.  He was really interested in supporting and getting involved with the Utah Waterski Club.  So this year we decided to bring Randy to the club meeting and have him present some of these ideas to the members.  It went over extremely well.  Randy was very open, positive, motivating, and fun.

He also has a lot of great ideas.  In June, Parks is going to have a demo day at course 1 where we can try out all the different skis.  He would also like to see if he can bring in a pro skier at the demo day for a clinic just for the club members.  He also talked about having a special Waterski Club night at the store where he would give extra discounts to the club members.  And as mentioned above, Randy gave everyone a $25.00 gift card to be used for anything in the store.  No strings attached.

As club members, Randy is giving us 25% off of anything in the watersports department, and at least 10% off of anything else in the store.  They will not be undersold by anyone.  Randy also told us that if we would like to demo a ski than he will wave the demo fee to club members.  They carry both HO and Radar skis so take advantage of that.  The bottom line is Randy is willing to support us as much as we are willing to support him. Just go in and ask for Randy or Cory and they will take care of you.

Parks Sportsman is really laying out the welcome mat for us.  They want to be a big player in Utah water skiing and a provider for the members of our club.  If we want these type of benefits to continue, then we need to give our supporters our business.  For a more detailed post on Parks Sportsman and everything they have to offer, look at my past posts where I gave a detailed description of the store.  Parks Sportsman in located in North Orem at 644 North State Street.  Their number is 801-225-0227.

Another benefit of having Randy Park come to our meeting was it movtivated another one of our club supporters to increase their benefits to us.  Justin Jones, owner of Custom Covers in Salt Lake, also attended our club meeting.  Afterwards Justin caught up with me and told me that he was so motivated by Randy's presentation that he would like to increase his benefits to the members of the club.  In the past, Justin, who makes the best quality tops and covers in the industry in my opinion, has been offering club members a 5% discount on his products during the regular season, and a 20% discount during the off season.  Well now, Justin will give members of the club a 25% discount all year on all his products.  And in the off-season he will do even better than that.

Let me say this about Justin and Custom Covers.  Last Fall, after my original bimini top disintegrated when I was down at Lake Mead, Justin made a new fold-out bimini top for me as well as a snap-on cover for my open bow.  The difference in quality between my original bimini and my new one from Justin is night and day.  You can't even compare the two.  The new one is so much stronger, easier to use, and way better looking.  I honestly don't think there's a better bimini out there than what Justin makes.  So take advantage of it.

This coming year the board will have a new look with some different faces on it.  A few different members stated their desire to be on the board so some of the current ones will be stepping down. I'm not sure yet what all the changes will be.  But we will let you know as soon as it happens.

See you on the lake!
