September News

The semiannual (third Saturday in May/Sept) Utah Water Ski Club Adopt-a-Park service project is Saturday September 19th from 10 am-11 am. We will be picking up trash for one hour, the board is expecting a large turnout due to the low turnout in May. A reminder that all members are required to attend one Adopt-A-Park service project every year. The board does realize that there are circumstances when members can't make one of the two Adopt-a-Park service projects, in those cases the board asks than you go down to Utah Lake State Park on your own and ask what you can do for one hour to help out. If you do go down on your own fill out page four of the "Volunteer Agreement and Time Record" at this link http://innerweb.nr.utah.gov/parks/GROUPFOR071508.pdf then notify the board by sending a email to utahwaterskiclub@gmail.com with a photo or scanned copy of a filled out page four of the "Volunteer Agreement and Time Record." Please email utahwaterskiclub@gmail.com by the 17th to let the board know if you will be attending the Adopt-a-Park service project, you can also RSVP on the clubs Facebook page by going to https://www.facebook.com/events/815583875204726.

The club is tentatively planning on moving one or both both courses to the east into deeper and normally a little smoother water on Sunday September 13th if we can get 6+ people to help out. A reminder that club members that help move courses/docks will get paid $15 a hour which the board voted to do a few years ago since moving courses/docks is hard work that very few people are willing to do. The plan will be to meet at the harbor at 9 am then travel out to the course working well into the afternoon. If you can help out please contact Tim Peterson (801) 659-0089 waterskinude@yahoo.com. If we can't get enough people to help out on Sunday the 13th we will make one last attempt on Saturday the 19th in conjunction with the Adopt-a-Park service project but with the weather expected to turn colder next week we would rather get it done on the 13th in the warmer water.

The harbor and the MAIN path out is down to about 26" deep but if you get out of the main path you WILL hit the bottom. Most of our ski boats have a draft of around 22" so you are safe if you are very careful. Use the middle ramp on the north side of the harbor and proceed to the southwest corner of the middle dock to pick up and drop off. Currently the end of the ramp is marked with orange buoys, as the water level drops be careful not to back your trailer off of the end of the ramp. Follow the red line in the below map staying about 40-50' away from the north dike/shore, avoid getting too close to the far west ramp area where there are rocks. If you follow this path you should be able to continue to use the lake until the water level drops to -6.00", currently it is at -5.70". It is still risky due to unknown objects/rocks that have been thrown into the lake. Once out of the harbor go towards Mt Nebo and watch your depth gauge decrease as you near the entrance to Provo Bay, once the depth starts to increase again that is when you take a hard left. If done properly the clubs information buoy/course/dock will line up which is the center of the channel. The course itself and around the dock is still plenty deep to ski but gets shallow quickly if you go north/south/east of the course/dock area.

Congratulations to all of the Utah Water Ski Club members who participated in the Utah State Championships at Bear Hollow Lakes last month. Club members included Keith Morgan, John Lohner, Mike/Tylor/Josh Nelson, Matt Chipman, Tim Peterson, and Ryan Christopher. There were 60+ people at this event including pro skier Chris Rossi who ran ran 4 @ 41'. For pictures of the club members that won medals go to www.utahwaterski.com or the clubs Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/utahwaterski.

July News

UWSC Members,

The club is currently still skiing course #4a (see below picture) which is getting very shallow on the west end. Remember when skiing course #4a to veer to the north on the west end to drop, when coming back into the course don't line up with the course until you are almost to the green 55 meter buoys.

The club is tentatively planning to set up course #4b on July 18th. On July 18th we also plan to move course #4a anchors to the east to get out of the shallow water on the west end and we plan to move the dock a little to the north and west into deeper water. The club is looking for about 8 people who can help on July 18th starting sometime around 9am and lasting much of the day. If you can help please contact Tim Peterson (801) 659-0089 waterskinude@yahoo.com.

As the summer goes on make sure you avoid the shallow area in the below picture.

In addition to picking up trash we will be moving rocks off of the beach. The State Park will provide some wheel barrows and trash bags so all you really need to bring is gloves and clothing you can get muddy/dirtyAll club members are required to attend one Adopt-a-Park service project every year or go down to Utah Lake State Park on your own and ask what you can do for one hour. If you go down on your own make sure you fill out a "Volunteer Agreement and Time Record" then take a picture of it with your phone (can also scan) then e-mail it to utahwaterskiclub@gmail.com to get credit.

-Please e-mail the club by May 14th and let the board know if you will be attending and how many in your group will be eating lunch. -Membership cards (see back for discounts) and boat stickers have been sent out to all paid members, same key as the last 8+ years. Please welcome the three new members (Kent Rominger, David Sikich, and Brad Caldwell) to the club when you see them. If you lost your key or have not received your membership card e-mail Garn Arnold garnski@yahoo.com for a new one.

-After/during the service project we need some members to help move course #3 dock to the harbor to be taken out and placed in dry storage for the coming year due to low water. If you can help move the dock e-mail Tim Peterson waterskinude@yahoo.com and let him know.

-Course #4a is currently up and will be usable through about the end of June (good until -4.75) at which point we will move to course #4b for the rest of the summer/fall. See below picture for course locations and remember that is is shallow at the west end of course #4a so veer to the north when dropping. The club does plan to move course #4a two buoys to the east some time this summer so the shallow area on the west end will be less of a problem in the future.

Happy Skiing!

Shallow water in 2015!

A reminder that when the water is low like this year that you will want to follow the below directions (pic from 2004 when water level was -7.00) to course #4a/b to avoid a shallow area, especially when the water drops below -4.00. Current water level is about -3.30 http://water1.cuwcd.com/reservoirs/ResInfo.aspx?res=ulake the forecast is for it to peak around -3.20 in April/May then drop to -6.00 by fall. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Fyvuhy2yNY_Q4KBAPm3eFuKK6wsBInKbnoMrEXBf2VY/edit?hl=en#gid=0

Click on the below picture for a cool close up of course #3 and 4a/b locations from July 2014 when the water around the courses was clear for Utah Lake. In general the lighter the color around the courses the shallower, ignore the lighter color father west which is not shallow water. Notice the shallow area on the west end of course #4a which is why when you ski this course you will want to drop about 100' feet to the north of center on the west end.

Annual Club Meeting/Activity

The clubs annual meeting/activity is February 5th at 6:00 pm in room 200C (room may change) of the lobby of the South Town Expo Center. This year we have pro skier Marcus Brown and the guys from HO coming in to talk for 15 minutes about their products. All club members including immediate family members will be given free entrance into the boat show after the short meeting that will be over by 7:00 pm, a light meal will be served starting at 6:00 pm. If you would like to go into the boat show before the meeting go to the information desk, the information desk will have the club member list to verify your membership with a valid photo ID. Please send a e-mail to utahwaterskiclub@gmail.com by the 3rd to let the board know if you are coming or not and how many of your family will be eating so that the board can plan the proper amount of food. You can also RSVP on the club's facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/events/858511964213987/ with how many people in your group plan on attending.

The main reason for the annual meeting is to elect a new board, the board is ALWAYS in need of new people and ideas. If you want to be on the board in 2015 please e-mail scotchipman@gmail.com. The UWSC board only meets four times (sometimes only by e-mail) a year and does not pay annual dues.

All members are strongly encourage to pay their membership dues of $125 ($25 for emeritus members) before the annual meeting so we can give you your membership card and boat sticker which saves the club time and money on mailing costs. Membership cards are good for various discounts at local retailers, club stickers are for your boat windshield ONLY so please make sure that is where they end up. Go to http://utahwaterski.blogspot.com/p/members.html for the details of how to renew on-line and pay with PayPal (you don't need a PayPal account), you can still snail mail everything in but please do everything electronically if possible then e-mail the application and liability waiver form to garnski@yahoo.com and Cc to utahwaterskiclub@gmail.com if you don't have a scanner you can also take a picture of the filled out application and liability waiver with your phone then e-mail. The club does need a signed application and liability waiver from ALL club members for insurance reasons. Club members are not longer required to be Active USA Water Ski members for $80, you can now just be  supporting for $35 if you for sure don't plan to ski in any USA Water Ski sanctioned tournaments. You can renew your USA Water Ski membership on-line at http://www.usawaterski.org/pages/Join.html remember to send the USA Water Ski conformation e-mail to garnski@yahoo.com and Cc to utahwaterskiclub@gmail.com as well.

Sincerely,
